Waterwheel and Photostream

As you can see, I have a new photo block below the search box in my sidebar which displays random photos from my Flickr Photostream. In order to absorb the enormous amount of knowledge required to make great photographs, I have been participating in weekly “photo assignments” on several online photography forums and they require assignment/contest entries be uploaded via Flickr.1 Not only is Flickr a lot of fun, they keep track of how many times a photo is viewed. I have even gotten a comment as well.

Learning the various techniques given in each assignment, challenges my creativity and exposes me to a wide range of approaches and methods for making great photographs. These assignments encourage me to get out to different places and just shoot what is there. The waterwheel photo is a perfect example of that idea and it is purely coincidental that I was out and about shooting when I took this shot of an eight spoked wheel during the eight o’clock morning hour of the eighth day of the eighth month of 2008. I experiment alot which further enhances my skills by trial and error and reinforces basic concepts and fundamentals of photography. Of course a lot of my experimenting unfortunately adds up to a lot of dud photos but that is how I learn best: by experience.

Listening to audio and video podcasts about photography is also a great way to grasp the fundamentals as well as pick up more advanced instruction. I have found a wide variety in iTunes including beginners lectures which share a lot of valuable information even though they are not regularly updated. All are produced by professional photographers working full-time in different capacities and full of beginner tips and intermediate tricks suited to my current learning level.

My photo gallery will still be updated and I have added albums including freelance, nature, and landscapes. My goal is to use these as a showcase of my journey while learning the art of photography and I hope you will enjoy the bumpy ride.

  1. This Week in Photography has just announced they will be moving their submissions requirement over to Photrade. []
